Amazon is launching a new invite-based ordering system for high demand, low supply products. The company told TechCrunch that the goal of the new option is to help prevent stock shortages and price gouging caused by robot traffic for high demand items in limited quantities. Amazon says its goal is to make it possible for real customers to buy such products. The new program is launching in the United States today, starting with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X game consoles sold and completed by Amazon.

“We work hard every day to provide customers with low prices, a wide selection and fast shipping,” Lew Mason, Amazon’s vice president of consumer experience, said in a statement to TechCrunch. “This includes developing a shopping experience where buyers can purchase items of interest without worrying that attackers are buying and reselling them at a much higher price.”

The new order option will allow customers to request an invitation to buy high-demand items on the product detail page at no additional cost. Any customer with an Amazon account can request an invitation to purchase an item, which means you don’t need a Prime account to send a request.

An image provided by Amazon shows that items that are part of the program will have a notice stating that they are “available by invitation”. The product page will also state that it is a “high demand item in limited supply” and that Amazon “will not be able to meet all requests.”

To ensure genuine customers receive purchase invitations, Amazon will remove bot-like messages and send invitations to remaining customers. The Company will authenticate customers by considering a number of factors, including the account’s previous purchase history and when the account was created. If a customer’s purchase invitation is granted, they will receive an email with instructions on how to purchase the item.

The email will detail how much time you have to complete your purchase. It will also include a link to the item so you can place your order. When you go to the product page, you can add the item to your shopping cart or select “Buy Now”. The product page will also show you how many hours and minutes are left before your invitation expires. Amazon will provide more purchase invitations as more units of this item come into stock.

Amazon says that while hackers make up a small percentage of activity on its marketplace, it is committed to preventing them from negatively impacting the shopping experience for users. The new checkout process should give Amazon customers a better chance of getting high demand items in limited quantities, as it aims to eliminate unscrupulous players who buy items and then resell them at higher prices, as happens with gaming consoles in recent years.

At launch, the new order option will be available for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in the US. Amazon plans to expand the program to other countries and products in the future.
