Archer said goodbye to the late Jessica Walter in an emotional scene in the last episode of Season 12. Spoiler ahead.
Walter voices Archer’s mother Mallory in the series, and the episode prepares her to come to her son’s rescue. Then, at the end of the episode, Archer receives a goodbye letter from his mother. “With all the chaos and confusion of late,” the letter says, “I thought it would be wise to make my own exit.” She says that “Wherever I am, I am watching you.” We then see Mallory and her husband Ron (voiced by Walter’s husband Ron Liebman, who died in 2019) on a beach watching the sunset.
To complete the scene it was necessary to delve into the archives of the show. Executive producer Casey Willis explained, “We collected and combed through Jessica and Ron lines from every season of Archer, which we thought would foster the spirit we were trying to evoke.” tv line. “together [creator] Adam Reed, we worked to pay tribute to our beloved Malory.”
Along with Archer, Walters was probably best known for her role as Lucille Bluth in Arrested Development, for which she earned an Emmy nomination. The actor was also nominated for her work as Mallory at the Emmy 2021 ceremony.
“If we’re lucky enough to have season 13, we have an idea of how we want to proceed. [Malory’s absense],” Willis told collider Back in August. “We’re talking about how the characters are going to react and how we want to portray it. So I don’t want to talk about it too much, because I don’t want season 13 to happen … I Looks like we’ve come up with some great ideas on how to handle this.”
