Astra’s last launch for NASA also ended in failure

Rocket launcher Astra is starting with a not-so-great track record after its latest mission for NASA ended in failure, just months after its launch. the last payload rocket for the agency did not reach orbit.

The TROPICS mission included two cubesats designed to join the existing NASA constellation of the same name. The Astra Rocket 3.3 booster took off as planned from Cape Canaveral, Florida on Sunday, but despite what Astra described as good first stage performance, the second stage encountered a problem and shut down before it could deliver the payload to intended orbit.

Astra had successful orbital launch in March, using the same iteration of their launch vehicle, for client Spaceflight, Inc. This mission started from Kodiak, Alaska. Astra has yet to complete a successful mission from Florida.

The company went public as a result of the SPAC merger in 2021, and its share price dropped nearly 24% before the market opened.
