White, the last Golden Girl and a comedy icon, died Friday morning at 99. The challenge has been bouncing around for days – I tried to find the first person to post about it and am still looking. It really started on Sunday, helped by a graphic created by Nicole Maria Aldredge, who writes, “I didn’t come up with the challenge, just made an accessible graphic.”

“On Betty White’s 100th birthday, January 17th, everyone should choose a local rescue or animal shelter and donate only $5 in Betty White’s name,” the graphic reads. “Make his 100th birthday the movement he deserves.”

Many of White’s fans lent their support behind the challenge.

Another said, “I received my baby from an animal rescue, so I look forward to participating in the #BettyWhiteChallenge.”

After his death, animal organizations fondly remember White.

“(Betty White) has always been a unique phenomenon, and we are honored to know and work with her during her remarkable life,” said Robin Ganzert, American Humane President and CEO, said in a statement Last week. “Betty dedicated herself to protecting and improving the quality of life for animals around the world. … On behalf of the millions of animals whose lives you touched, thank you, Betty!”
