It’s been quite a ride for Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2, from the excitement of its long-pending announcement in 2019 to the tragic flames two years later that prompted publisher Paradox Interactive to “indefinitely” delay the project. inspired to do. It was a relief when Paradox announced earlier this month that development had not been canceled outright, but in an interview with the Swedish website Keep going (google translated), CEO Fredrik Wester said it has come very close.
“When we pulled the game from the original developer, we had a lengthy review in terms of ending the game. [development] Or drive it forward,” Wester said. “We were actually ready to shut down production completely. But we found a pitch that we thought was good enough to run on, played on, and we very much hope it will be a good game that lives up to the expectations of the players. “
Bloodline 2 was being developed by Hardsuit Labs prior to the delay, but the project was called off in February 2021 after several delays and setbacks including the loss of its narrative lead, including lead writer Brian Mitsoda, creative director Kai Clooney. and seniors were involved. Narrative designer Cara Ellison. The new developer is still not revealed, but Wester describes it as “a very reputable and talented developer” who has shipped several games before.
As for the possible future of the series beyond Bloodlines 2, Wester said it all depends on how the game plays out. “There’s a huge desire for good games in the RPG genre so I absolutely don’t want to close any doors,” he said. “But I want to see what happens, and what we can do, and how the bloodlines are obtained.”
The original Bloodlines was critically acclaimed and is one of the best RPGs money can buy, but it was too small at launch and had the extreme misfortune of being released on November 16, 2004 – the same day as Half-Life 2. Sales were not good, and developer Troika Games closed its doors shortly after. Bloodline has been moribund since then, but Vampire has had a small renaissance: Most recently, Masquerade with a battle royale and a narrative RPG in development. More than 15 years later, Bloodlines remains on our annual list of the 100 Best Games You Should Play Now.
There’s still no indication of a new release date for Bloodline 2 at this point. Avenza asked about speculation that it could be out sometime in 2023, but Wester only said there was “a while left” before it was ready to go.
