Activision announced in August that the Zombies mode in Call of Duty: Vanguard would be developed by Treyarch, and would continue the Zombies story that had previously been exclusive to the Black Ops series. Now the reveal trailer is here, and as you’d expect it’s full of Nazis, zombies, Nazi zombies, and a look at the new “Dark Aether” skills our fearless heroes will use to put them back on the ground where they Huh.
The trouble begins with Oberführer Wolfram von List, who decides that it would be a good idea to engage with a supernatural presence to bring “an army of the dead” into the mortal realm. This isn’t the most well thought out plan ever, and my impression is that the Nazi officer ends up with the short end of the stick – lol, perhaps, but still very bad news because it naturally doesn’t take long to solve his problem. To be our problem.
Once the ball starts rolling, Vanguard’s zombies mode sounds about what fans of the sub-series would expect—that is, a small, international squad of era-appropriate soldiers pitted against endless zombies. They have more than just old firepower to throw, though: the trailer also gives us a look at some of the supernatural weapons and skills the team will bring to battle.
Vanguard’s zombie mode will be the prelude to the horrifying tale of the undead that began in 2020’s Black Ops – the Cold War. Which makes sense, really—World War II was the prelude to the Cold War, after all. We will undoubtedly learn a lot ahead of the release of Call of Duty: Vanguard, which is due out on November 5.
