When I was recently in London, it was difficult for me to spend even one pound in cash: cashless transactions were more than encouraged – they were often mandatory. Forced to pay by card or forced to pay in cash?

There is no doubt that the COVID-19 pandemic has made people less likely to use cash to pay for their everyday purchases.

Due to hygiene and social distancing measures, merchants who previously discouraged customers from paying small amounts with a card are now encouraging contactless transactions. And since many outdoor activities were simply out of the question, cash was more often accumulated than spent.
