Welcome to The TechCrunch Exchange, a weekly startup and marketplace newsletter. It’s inspired TechCrunch+ daily column where it got its name. Want to have it in your inbox every Saturday? Register here.
When you start a project, it’s easy to get carried away with it. Then time passes, and suddenly half a decade has passed. Equity, the podcast I had to help start when I wasn’t even working here, is one such project. So is The Exchange.
I started writing a daily market column the day after I got out of rehab, back in 2016. The project, then called The Editor’s Morning Note, has evolved over time. When I joined Crunchbase, founding Crunchbase News, it was renamed to Morning Markets. Then, when I was lucky enough to return to TechCrunch, it launched again without a name.
Henry Pickavet, the TechCrunch name you don’t see often, but which you unconditionally appreciate thanks to its extensive behind-the-scenes work, helped give the series a new name. This is how The Exchange returned at the end of 2019. Later we added a newsletter once a week, the same newsletter you are reading now.
This is by no means the largest TechCrunch newsletter – the Daily Crunch is much bigger. But Exchange email has long been a place for me to post lumbering reports and discuss topics and issues in a more relaxed manner than usual. It was truly a weekly joy.
This is also the last time I’m going to write this, at least for a while. Anna Heim, which you probably already know for her regular and vital contributions to The Exchange, will take over from next week. She may ask me to insert a few words here and there, or not. It will depend on her.
What I can promise is that Anna and I are very similar in how we approach startups, venture capital and the business climate of each. She was an incredible collaborator, pushing me to do more planning. I am more than grateful for her past contributions and in awe of what she came up with.
Why change? Since I became the Editor-in-Chief of TechCrunch+, I have less time for certain tasks. I’ve given up writing most of the Daily Crunch and cut back on 99% of news writing (startup funding rounds, etc.) so I can double down on hiring efforts and work to get our jobs done faster and with more impact. Let’s see how well I do there. and i welcome your feedback.
Also, you know, if you haven’t joined TC+ yet, now is the time to do so as we are recruiting and kicking ass. So, sign up and join the fun.
But when it comes to time, I’m getting more and more submerged, which means that this newsletter, with its 40,000 or 50,000 readers, has fallen on my priority list to the point where it no longer makes sense for me to selfishly hold on to it. She needs someone who can give her—give you—the attention she deserves.
So, in the hands of Anna, I leave you. This change will be an update and I hope you enjoy Anna. You can follow her on Twitter here.
I will continue to write a daily column, often with Anna, as before. But from now on Saturdays are Anna’s possessions. Hugs, thanks and go ahead! – Alex
