Cillian Murphy is cast as the lead figure in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film Oppenheimer about the invention of the atomic bomb. Murphy will play the lead role of J. Robert Oppenheimer, who is credited as the ‘father’ of the weapon of mass destruction.
Set during World War II and based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, Nolan’s film adaptation is scheduled to begin shooting sometime in 2022, as reported by CNN. The film will release on 22 July 2023.
After shifting to Universal Pictures after the end of Nolan’s long-standing relationship with Warner Bros., Oppenheimer will extend the life of his titular figurehead, who worked with the US military to develop nuclear weapons during World War II. The supported project was led by the Manhattan Project. .

Analysis: Nolan and Murphy do a good job together
It looks like Cillian Murphy is never too far from a Christopher Nolan-led project. The Irish star is best known for his role as Thomas Shelby in the hit Peaky Blinders TV series (which itself is getting a film adaptation in 2023), but has also starred in several Nolan-directed films in the past.
Murphy has starred in a number of Nolan-directed motion pictures over the past decade and a half, including Batman Begins, Inception and Dunkirk, although Oppenheimer would be playing a major role in one of Murphy Nolan’s films for the first time.
The choice of Cillian Murphy is hardly a surprise, either, given Nolan’s track record of dipping into the same pool of actors between each of his projects. Other stars who make regular appearances in the director’s filmography include Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Michael Caine – veteran British actor has appeared in most Nolan-led projects, including Batman Begins Up Two and last year’s Tenet.
As far as Murphy’s participation in Oppenheimer is concerned, we’re tentatively excited to see him in the lead role. The actor regularly delivers great performances, whether in massive TV hits like Peaky Blinders, or in more horror-themed projects like 28 Days Later and A Quiet Place Part 2.
