How to teach TikTok what you like to watch

it’s called page for you for some reason

Tiktok is a brand new kind of social media platform. Unlike more traditional platforms like Instagram or Twitter, where you manually curate your feed for others to follow — most likely, people you know — TikTok is a great way to curate a highly personalized feed of videos. uses an algorithm. This algorithm can be shockingly specific because it assembles the videos you think you’ll like.

TikTok’s main page is named For You page – and it really means For you. For example, when I’ve been on TikTok for a while, the algorithm finds out that I’m an adult emo kid (it was never a phase, mom) trying to learn French, spending a lot of time playing spends sims 4, and it’s weird too. But TikTok’s algorithm itself didn’t get that shockingly distinctive. It took me time and effort to completely tailor the video to my taste.

While TikTok eventually learns the types of videos you like, when an account is brand new, it can be challenging to find content that you might like. In the beginning, the For You page will usually show mega-viral videos from the app’s most popular users, but if you want to see what other videos and creators are up to, you can follow a few steps.

Use the Search tab to find trending sounds, hashtags, and effects

When getting started on TikTok, the easiest way to find videos is to see what’s trending. The Discover icon is next to the Upload button at the bottom of the screen. Tap on popular hashtags to find a collection of sounds and effects.

By clicking on these videos, finding entertaining content is quick and enjoyable. Saving sounds or interacting with videos via Like, Share or Comment starts the algorithm figuring out what you like.

The Discovery page of Tiktok lets you search on hashtags.

You can also find all the videos that use the same sound.

Find things you love

When you’re in the Discover tab, use the search bar at the top to see the topics you love. When I first typed “Science” in the search bar, TikTok showed me all the top videos on that topic. If I wanted to explore even more, I could click through to users, hashtags, and other options.

Unlike looking for trending sounds and topics, this method is an easy way to find different types of videos with different hashtags and music. This will help ensure that videos are liked (by clicking the heart-shaped “Like” button on the side) and following creators (by clicking on the creator’s icon at the edge of the screen and then on the red “Follow” button) That type the content you like comes to your For You page.

click on sounds

The more the algorithm learns about you, the more you’ll start to see trends within whatever TikTok rabbit hole you’ve gone down. Too often, these trends are built around sounds. Sounds can be audio clips from popular media, music, or even audio created by another user.

In the lower-right corner of a video, you’ll see a rotating circle, and this is where the sound resides. By pressing it, it’s easy to find a bunch of other videos that use that sound (if the sound is trending or at least relatively popular).

While you may only be viewing videos that use the same sound, it’s a great way to find a large number of creators who may not have visited your For You page.

Tiktok can be a great tool to pass the time, socialize or learn new things. In the beginning, however, it can take a while to build up the pattern before the algorithm starts working for you. Just be careful – it’s very easy to accidentally lose three hours of your day without watching TikTok.
