Destiny 2: The Witch Queen’s weapon crafting system is coming into focus, and the expansion will make Artifact Mode more accessible and reduce vault clutter by making armor masterwork less expensive.

Bungie outlines some of the upcoming changes to Artifacts and Armor in its latest blog Post, Starting with The Witch Queen and Season 16, you’ll be able to unlock more than the normal 12 Artifact Mode by grinding away more XP. Unlocking all 25 modes on Artifact will take a long time, but it will actually be possible, and even a few extra mods will go a long way toward creating variety. Bungie says it’s also bringing back some “perennial favorite Anti-Champion” modes for Season 16, along with new modes that highlight the new weapon perks that come in the expansion.

Armor is also getting an update that players have requested for years. From season 16 onwards, changing masterworked armor elements (arc, solar, void and stagnation) will no longer force you to take a second hostage. instead of the current system, which charges an ascending shard to swap a masterworked giant and Three Shark for masterworked exotics, you’ll only need to spend a few flashes and an upgrade module in the future. That’s a huge discount – somewhere around 90% off current costs. This would free up vault space because duplicate armor would not be necessary to proceed, and it would also make build-crafting much less expensive.

Bungie’s post ends with a brief teaser for the upcoming weapon crafting system in The Witch Queen, which ties in with changes to the weapon masterwork.

“Elements of the new weapon crafting system will encourage you to use many different weapons and ask you to burn hard-earned masterwork material on a weapon that you can only use for a few hours, only to generate orbs,” Bungie says. This supports the popular theory that we have to reach kill or use milestones with specific guns in order to continue the weapon crafting process, which at first blush seems similar to the old Black Armory system.

Bungie was quick to add that hasty upgrades to all those guns “seemed like a tall order,” so it’s adjusting how the weapons generate ornaments of power to make masterworking less necessary. Simply put, we’re getting new helmet mods that enable specific types of weapons to generate orbs on kill. This is great news for exotics, who don’t have Catalyst because they can’t make orbs, but it could be bad news for basically every other gun. It will be interesting to see how these new mods fit into the popular loadout – hopefully smoothly, and not like a round peg in a square hole.
