The internet sensation has captured our attention and productivity since January when the game burst onto the scene.

As you know, players are required to guess a five-letter word in six tries. With each guess, the letters change color to show how close you are to the correct answer.

A gray letter means that it is not in the word. When it’s yellow, you have the correct letter in the wrong place, while the green letters are where they should be.

Since then we have also seen many Wordle spin-offsincluding world, Cordle, HurdleWord Master, Dordle (two Wordle puzzles at once) and Crosswordle, combining Wordle with crossword puzzles.

But whether you’re just starting out on your Wordle journey or you’re just looking to increase your stats, a little help never hurts. Here are some helpful tips on how to master Wordle (and similar games).

Best First Word for Wordle

This is perhaps the most important step when playing Wordle: which word to choose first? Even mathematician checked the algorithm to help determine which seed words might work best.

There are several different approaches. My technique is to use a word with a lot of vowels, three to four to be exact. I often start with words like “OIL”, “Oh” or “FAREWELL”. You can also try the Wheel of Fortune approach and focus on words with R, S, T, L, N, and E. For example, STERN or RENTS is a good word that uses a few popular consonants.

This first guess should help you easily narrow down the other words you can choose from. You may have a couple of free letters or even none. Depending on your guess, focus on the letters you haven’t used yet.

Let’s say you’re playing PRO and the O is green and the T is yellow. Try to find words with an “O” in the middle that not only contain the letter “T” but also do not use the letters “A”, “B”, or “U”. Also, in this case, do not use the letter “T” at the end. The faster you can narrow down the number of letters and placements, the faster you will find a solution.

Don’t forget 5-letter words with double letters

This is where Wordle can sometimes confuse you. If you’re stuck on a word and none of the other letters make sense, it’s possible that the same letter is used more than once in the answer. The virtual keyboard on the Wordle website helps here. Pay special attention to the letters you have. This can help you figure out if you need to repeat a letter.
