Award winning dystopian documentary thriller game Documents please now available on smartphones nine years after its original release. You can download the game at Apple App Store as well as google play store for $4.99 starting today.

Papers, Please is set in the fictional communist state of Arstotzka, where you play as a border control agent who faces numerous moral dilemmas. The game challenges players to confront their own prejudice while touching on real-life immigration issues.

“Your job as an immigration inspector is to control the flow of people entering the Arstotzcan side of Grestin from Kolechia,” the game description reads. “Among the crowds of immigrants and visitors looking for work, smugglers, spies and terrorists are hiding. Using only documents provided by travelers and the primitive screening, search and fingerprint systems of the Ministry of Admissions, you must decide who can enter Arstotzka and who will be rejected or arrested.

Papers, Please was created by an independent game developer. Lucas Pope and published through his production company 3909 LLC. The game was released in August 2013 for Microsoft Windows and OS X, for Linux in February 2014, for iOS on iPad in December 2014, and for PlayStation Vita in December 2017.

Upon release, the game was received positively and is seen as a showcase for video games as an art form. Papers, Please has received BAFTA gaming awards in the Strategy and Simulation categories, and most recently won the Peabody Award for Digital Storytelling.

Pope tweeted that the smartphone version of the game includes an updated user interface and minor tweaks to make the game accessible to mobile devices. If you already have the iPad app, you’ll get free access to the iPhone app, he says.
