Elden Ring’s character creation system has leaked online, giving us a glimpse of the customization features that will be included in FromSoftware’s upcoming game.

Recorded by YouTuber ER-SA during a recently closed network test of the game (and viewed by VGC), the six-minute video shows the character creation screen in action. Although the system looks unfinished, with many of its toggles and sliders left blank or unlabeled, ER-SA is able to edit each of them to suit its character’s play.

The video gives a good indication of the width of the system. As well as a range of hairstyles and facial features to choose from, your character’s basic bone structure can be altered for some pretty radical results. The shape of the mouth, nose and eyes can also be changed, and added to realistic designs or quite awkward positions.

The video also shows some pre-determined models that are equipped with weapons, items and armor. With a range of hair and skin colors, there are many body types to choose from, which can take on any color of the rainbow, from bright reds to sickly yellows.

Analysis: trend continuation

It looks like Elden Ring will take more than a few gameplay cues from FromSoftware’s previous releases, as it continues the trend of players creating truly monstrous characters. The character creation system of the Dark Souls series is somewhat famous for making players make funny faces, and it’s no different here. At the end of the video above, ER-SA shows how awesome your designs can be.

However, the character creator of Elden Ring also looks like a step up. With more customization options available, more options to choose from, and more sliders to slide, it looks as deep as the character creation screen of the recent Demon Souls PS5 remake. That system was widely praised for its wide range of options that allowed for all kinds of fictional and realistic characters.

After much anticipation and a little delay, the Elden Ring is almost here. The open-world, third-person action RPG that comes from the creator of the Dark Souls series in collaboration with Game of Thrones writer George R.R. Martin, will be released at the end of February.
