What just happened? A few weeks after canceling further development on the console versions, Elite Dangerous Frontier Developments revealed how console players can bring most of their progress to PC. The company also outlined some of its plans for a sandbox space sim.

This Week Frontier confirmed that those who own Elite Dangerous for PlayStation 4 or Xbox One can get a free copy for PC. It is unknown how and when this will happen, except that it will be a limited time offer.

Developer last week explained what items players can transfer to PC. Players will retain all of their ships, land vehicles, avatars, inventory, reputation, ranks, permits, code unlocks, engineering progress, tech custodian progress, crew progress, and cosmetics. Unfortunately, their squad membership, friend lists, and mission progress will be reset. Players will also have to rename their characters after the transfer.

It is noteworthy that aircraft carriers will not survive the transfer. Frontier encourages players to write off vehicles before transferring them and then use the refunded funds to repurchase them on PC. This method can take up to two weeks and involves the transfer of billions of game credits per player. The game’s premium currency, called ARX, is also not transferable from console to PC.

Border canceled future console updates for Elite Dangerous in March after months of trying to improve the performance of the latest add-on – Odyssey – which only launched on PC. Many gamers will likely take advantage of Frontier’s free offer to transfer their console to PC, but many others probably don’t have Elite-capable PCs. Without Odyssey, Elite’s system requirements are incredibly low by today’s standards, but the game has been a Windows-only game for years.

Frontier also recently unveiled a roadmap with three more updates planned for this year. The developer promises to keep optimizing Odyssey while developing the Elite Dangerous storyline. A “key feature overhaul” will take place in early 2023, but the developers don’t have much to say about it.
