His directives came the same week that Musk sent two leaked emails to employees that the company was ending its remote work option. Musk told employees that if they didn’t want to go back to the office, they should leave.

In the first email, which Musk later confirmed in a response via Twitter, he told employees they must work at least 40 hours at the Tesla office. A follow-up email, titled “to be very clear,” explained that “the older you are, the more visible your presence should be.”

Musk’s latest email has a darker tone on the economy, noting that he has a “very bad feeling” and hinting at a recession to come. Musk tells executives who receive the email that a 10% reduction in staff will be required.

Tesla and its subsidiaries employ 99,290 people according to its annual filing. These employees are scattered throughout its factories and businesses, including its Austin headquarters, as well as Buffalo, New York, Sparks, Nevada, Fremont, California, Berlin, and Shanghai. Tesla also has several offices in California and Germany and retail stores in Europe, Australia and North America.
