A Lord of the Rings anime movie is headed to theaters

It will be called the battle of Rohiriri

New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation are working on a new Lord of the Rings film that is bound for theaters, featuring an anime twist (Via Variety) movie will be called The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohiriri, and it will cover the history behind the Fort at Helm Deep – whose battle with its exploding walls, shield surfing, and incredible horse stunts is one of the most exciting parts of the entire original trilogy.

If you need to jog your memory:

Kenji Kamiyama will direct the film, and it will be interesting to see how well his style maps to the medieval fantasy setting – he has mostly dealt with future sci-fi projects before, including Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, 009 again cyborg, and netflix Ultraman. The film is being written by the creators The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, and while Peter Jackson is not directly involved, one of the writers of the original trilogy (and The Hobbit Movies) is acting as a consultant.

While the names behind the film are interesting, it doesn’t look like Warner Bros. or New Line are going to go deep into the Tolkien well for story ideas. rohiriri would only be depicted in a battle of a few hundred years ago the two towers. Compare this with, say, Amazon’s Lord of the Rings The show, which is set in another era, way Before War of the Ring – The characters in the anime movie may be unfamiliar to most viewers, but the world will likely be similar to what we’ve already seen. Of course, there’s still room for this project to get interesting, but it probably would have been more exciting if we’d had a story about something like the Silmarils or the fall of Numenor.

As of now, we are not aware of when the film will release or who will star in it.
