According to new rumours, Microsoft may announce another Xbox studio at E3 2021, taking its total first-party studios to 24.
Microsoft’s latest acquisition saw the company invest $7.5 billion to buy Bethesda’s parent company, ZeniMax Media; However, Windows Central editor Jez Corden believes the company isn’t quite ready yet.
In Windows Central Discord (thanks, Pure Xbox), Corden said that he believes “there’s a very good chance of at least one [Xbox] Announcement of acquisition [E3 2021]”, and if it doesn’t happen during the annual video game event from June 12 to June 15, Corden thinks it’s “on the horizon.”

Corden’s prediction may sound vague, but he followed up with his comments, saying he had heard “good, very good” rumors that Microsoft had acquired a new or existing IP, which could be combined with a studio acquisition . However, Corden emphasized that we don’t see the acquisition as ground-breaking as the Bethesda deal, adding that it is “not AAA-hype level stuff.”
Which studio might Microsoft buy next?
As with all the rumors and insider tips, we have to take Corden’s prediction with a pinch of salt, with Corden himself taking to Twitter to say he has “no hard evidence yet” of any Xbox acquisitions, or at E3 being announced in
lol didn’t intend for those comments to go far-fetched. But no, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was an acquisition, but I don’t have any solid evidence yet (I know I like my evidence).6 June 2021
That doesn’t mean it won’t happen, and it’s always fun to speculate which studios Microsoft might follow. If we heed Corden’s comment that this isn’t a studio that would result in “AAA-hype level stuff,” that means the acquisition could be something similar to when Microsoft bought We Happy Few developer Compulsion Games.
Asobo Studios could be a good bet for Microsoft’s next acquisition. The team was responsible for the Disneyland Adventures, Quantum Break PC port for the Kinect and even worked on Young Conqueror for the Hololens. More recently, the studio released A Plague’s Tale Innocence and Microsoft’s flight simulator, so this is a studio that has an existing relationship with Xbox and a proven track record.
Of course, we’ll have to wait and see if Microsoft reveals whether it has created another studio at E3, and you can keep up with all the announcements on Nerdshala.
