It’s now more than two years since the final episode of Game of Thrones aired. This isn’t the end of TV’s adventures in Westeros, however, as the prequel series House of the Dragon is coming to HBO and Sky Atlantic in 2022.
The first Game of Thrones spin-off is currently in production, and it’s a story of blonde ambition. His 2018 chronicle of the Targaryen dynasty, House of the Dragon, is set nearly 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, based on A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin’s Fire and Blood. It takes place after a new king of Westeros, Viserys Targaryen (played by Paddy Considine) has taken the Iron Throne.
While plot specifics are thin on the ground, HBO Seven Kings is remarkably clear about other aspects of the show, releasing cast information and detailed character summaries that give us an idea of what we’re looking for in the show. Huh. We have also seen the first official images from the show.
After the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones proves to be extremely divisive, House of the Dragon is under pressure to restore our love affair with Westeros. Here’s what we know about the highly anticipated prequel series so far, including the release date, cast, and possible story.

Martin to work anyway – in an interview with Chicago’s WTTW TV station (reported by the Sun), the Westeros producer said: “It’ll probably be next spring, I guess.”

As well as launching on HBO and HBO Max in the US, the series has been confirmed for release on Sky and Now in the UK, one after the other. Sky TV signs new deal with HBO in October 2019 Which will keep the HBO show on the platform for “many years to come.”

Now that House of the Dragon has begun filming, HBO has been pretty open about who’s in the cast, and who’s playing what characters. This will undoubtedly be the go-to about the show — although there is an additional cast member who has confirmed their participation in the series ahead of the official announcement, which we’ll detail below.
We’re going to be wary of spoilers here, because if you dig into the events of Fire and Blood, you can ruin part of the show’s story. Below, we’re going to stick with what HBO has revealed so far, so you can just get an idea of how the characters on the show are getting started.
from the beginning, Paddy Considine King Viserys takes on the role of Targaryen, who has been chosen by the Lords of Westeros as the successor to the previous king – Jheerys Targaryen. HBO described him as a ‘warm, kind and gentle man’ whose main goal is to continue his grandfather’s way of doing things. But since when does being a ‘decent man’ get you anywhere in Westeros, except dead? Viserys is also the name of Daenerys’ older brother.
Let’s move on to the high-profile piece of casting on the show. Viserys’ younger brother Prince Damon plays Targaryen is Matt Smith The Crown and Doctor Who. Described as an unrivaled warrior, he is the heir to the throne of Westeros – he is also capable of riding dragons, and that seems to be waiting to happen. Not everyone in Westeros seems to be a fan of Daemon, as we’ll touch on below.
Let’s move on to another Targaryen. truth seekers Emma D’Arcy Viserys’ first child is playing Princess Renera Targaryen – it seems her only major shortcoming on the show is being a woman, when the world around her tends to favor men in positions of power. But hey, she’s also able to ride dragons, and she’s of pure Valyrian blood. Millie Alcock will play A smaller version of Princess Renera.
Ready Player One Olivia Cook Alicent plays Hightower. She is politically savvy, and is closely associated with the king and his allies – and she is his daughter. rice if‘ Otto Hightower, The Hand of the King. Hightower does not trust Damon, and regards his position as the heir to the throne as a dire situation. The shortened version of Alicent will be played by Emily Carey.
Steve Toussaint Lord Corliss plays Valerian, also known as Sea Snake. He has great maritime energy, the largest navy in Westeros, and himself a well-known adventurer on the high seas. HBO says Valerian Bloodline is as old as House Targaryen. Interestingly, in March 2021, it was reported by Deadline that HBO was considering a spin-off focusing exclusively on the character.
Eve Best Plays the role of Corliss’s wife, Princess Renées Valerion. She was in contention to rule Westeros, except when the Great Council relinquished her position as successor to elect her cousin, Viserys, as king. The Reason? He is a man, and he is not. This is sure to be the source of some major tension on the show.
Other characters include Dev sonoya mizuno As HBO puts it, Massaria has been “sold out more times than she can remember”. However, she has survived a life of decline, and now finds herself as Prince Damon Targaryen’s closest ally, making her quite a powerful figure in Westeros.
The last of the officially announced cast is Dornish lad Ser Kristen Cole, played by fabian frankelli. He’s a commoner, but since HBO notes that he kicks ass with a sword, you can expect him to play a key role in the larger story of House of the Dragon.
Finally, The Hobbit Actors Graham McTavish After reportedly being seen on set, the stylist confirmed that she is part of the cast for the show. Who he is playing, however, remains a mystery, as he has yet to be officially added to the cast by HBO. The actor is clearly in an epic fantasy space right now, given that he’s also got a role in The Witcher Season 2.
We will update this cast list once we know more about who is participating in this huge show.
House of the Dragon: What is the story about?
The new Game of Thrones prequel series focuses on House Targaryen, so expect ambition, incest and of course, winged, fire-breathing reptiles. George RR Martin confirmed the latter her blog, acknowledging, “I can do It is said that there will be dragons. Everyone else has said so, so why can’t I?”
As mentioned, the new show is based on Martin’s 2018 book Fire and Blood, which managed to upset a section of the fanbase. No The Winds of Winter is the long-awaited sixth novel in the A Song of Ice and Fire saga — it’s been 10 years since the previous installment, A Dance with Dragons, landed in bookstores. Instead the book chronicles the dragon-riding Targaryen family – the author himself describes it as a “GRRMarillion”, a nod to the dense JRR Tolkien nonfiction that traces the Pre-Lord of the Rings history to Middle-earth. remembers. .
In terms of chronology, House of the Dragon will be set 300 years before Game of Thrones. The series promises to tell the story of House Targaryen — but nothing else has been shared about the plot, other than what we learned in the character description above.
There’s likely to be a lot of family feuds – Targaryen was useless long Along with origin stories from other prominent Westerosi houses such as the Baratheons, Tyrells and Lannisters – before Viserys and Daenerys came along.
In other words, House of the Dragon has a similar mix of epic battles, political intrigue, and betrayals to Game of Thrones, with one big difference — it’s a prequel, we know exactly where it’s going.
Who is making House of the Dragon?
A Twitter announcement in October 2019 revealed that George RR Martin would form a new Game of Thrones prequel series with Ryan Condall. Kondal is best known for scripting the USA Network alien invasion drama Colony, and the Dwayne Johnson-starring game adaptation Rampage.
Kondal will write the show and share performing duties with Miguel Sapochnik. Sapochnik directed some of Game of Thrones’ most epic episodes — including Season 6’s “Battle of the Bastards” and Season 8’s “The Long Night” — and will direct several episodes of House of the Dragon, including the pilot.
Other confirmed producers include Vince Gerardis, Sarah Lee Hayes and Ron Schmidt. Directors Claire Kilner, Geeta V Patel and Greg Yatanes are also working on the series. Variety reports that House of the Dragon will be the first show to use the V stage, a new virtual production stage at Warner Bros.
