Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man is returning to the MCU — but not in the way you might be thinking, according to a new leak.
LEGO_Fulcrum, a leaker of the unannounced LEGO set, recently revealed that Iron Man (and by extension Downey Jr.) will be part of Marvel’s What If? series on Disney Plus.
To accompany their latest leak, Lego_fulcrum on their Instagram page (per comicbook.com) posted an image of a yet-to-be-announced Lego set, which reveals Tony Stark in a Sakarian Iron Man suit.

What can we conclude from this leak? What if in the future…? episode, it appears that Iron Man – not Thor – is transported to the corporeal planet.
For those who need to be reminded, the realization is the planet seen in Thor: Ragnarok, ruled by the Grandmaster of Jeff Goldblum. Here, Thor is captured by the Grandmaster and fights the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) to entertain the population of Sakar.

What does all this mean for Downey Jr.’s return as Iron Man? If the comments made by Jeff Goldblum in a 2019 BuzzFeed interview are anything to go by, Downey Jr. Will Come back to lent your voice in the animated form of Tony Stark.
Goldblum said at the time, “I went to Disney Studios and I recorded Grandmaster’s voice for an episode of the show on Disney Plus called What If…?.” “It’s an animated version of all the characters we know and love from Marvel and this episode includes the Grandmaster and Iron Man, so Robert Downey [Jr.] Will raise voice for it.”

Marvel what if…? Jeffrey Wright (The Batman, James Bond) as the Watcher, a cosmic creature who watches over the Marvel Multiverse but who rarely, if ever, interferes with events. The Watcher will narrate the series, which will explore what would have happened at major events in the MCU had it played out differently.
So far, we know of an episode where Peggy Carter takes the Super-Soldier Serum instead of Steve Rogers, one where T’Challa is kidnapped by the Ravers instead of Star-Lord, and an installment where Bucky Barnes fights Marvel superhero zombie outbreak.
Marvel what if…? Chris Evans, the late Chadwick Boseman, Josh Brolin, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Hayley Atwell, Karen Gillan and Sebastian Stan will see a number of actors re-voicing their MCU characters.
The Disney Plus series will begin airing exclusively on Disney’s streaming platform sometime in August.
