Midsummer (2019)

If you love Hereditary, you shouldn’t miss Midsummer. This latest Ari Aster horror flick follows Dani, a grieving college student, who reunites with her boyfriend and his friends on a last-minute trip to Sweden. However, the group does not end up as tourists in Stockholm. Instead, they move to a small settlement to celebrate the mid-summer festival that takes place only once in 90 years. At first, their hosts seem mildly bizarre but harmless. However, things move fast. Dani and company soon find themselves isolated and alone in the grip of a pagan cult.

Midsummer slowly and purposefully builds on its horrors and absurdity. The film resembles a drug trip – surreal, outlandish and gripping. The cinematography is extremely vivid and colourful, creating an exquisite juxtaposition between the scenes and the horrific events unfolding on screen. It is one of the best horror movies of recent years and undoubtedly one of the best movies on Amazon Prime Video.

Lifeforce (1985)

This 1985 film is a true cult classic. It is a mashup of many genres. At first, you’d think this would be a space-based sci-fi movie, as a manned expedition to Halley’s Comet finds a hidden alien spacecraft in stagnation with three human-looking aliens. Then, the movie goes into horror mode as the female-looking alien comes to life and the stars suck the “life force” out of the humans. Finally, the final third of the film is the end of the world, as humanity appears to be on its last legs. It’s a Wild Ride It’s One of the Best Horror Movies on Amazon Prime

Lighthouse (2019)

Robert Eggers hit it out of the park with his directorial debut The Witch. In 2019, he made another period horror film with The Lighthouse starring two famous actors, Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson.

Set in the late 19th century, two actors play characters managing a remote lighthouse on the New England coast. That’s all we want to say about this film. You should experience the rest of this black and white film for yourself. While it is not supernatural like The White, it is undoubtedly one of the best horror movies on Amazon Prime.

Monster (2010)

Before directing the 2014 version of Godzilla by Gareth Edwards, he directed this very small budget film, which is also about giant cashew-like creatures. It takes place in Mexico, shortly after an alien space probe crashes in that country, and massive monsters begin to appear. The story, about a couple who try to make their way back to America through “infested territory,” is just an excuse to see some cool giant monster action. This is one of the best horror movies on Amazon Prime Video.

vivarium (2020)

Imogen Poots and Jesse Eisenberg play a young couple in this 2020 film. Like many young couples, they are looking for a nice, affordable home to live in. They are directed to a new housing development called Yonder. All the houses in this development look exactly the same. The two men try to leave Yonder, but for some reason they can’t. However, getting stuck in housing development is the least of their problems.

Suspiria (2018)

Inspired by the 1977 Italian film of the same name, Suspiria is more a reimagined than a remake of the horror classic. It auditions a young American, Susie Bannion, to be part of a prestigious dance group in West Berlin. As she studies there, terrible things start to happen to the people around her. One of the dance students disappears after telling her therapist that her teacher is involved in magic.

Suspiria’s unique blend of violence, dance and hypnotic scenes feels like you’re witnessing a forbidden ancient ritual. Thanks to Luca Guadagnino’s excellent direction, it’s both thrilling and disturbing. Some critics may call it a sham, but it is nonetheless one of the best horror films of recent years.

Nosferatu (1922)

Before Dracula was cemented in the popular consciousness as a gentleman with sleek hair and a flowing cape, he was Count Orlok—a mysterious, demonic vampire.

Best Classic Movies on Amazon Prime

Nosferatu is the first (though unofficial) silver screen adaptation of Dracula. It is a 1922 silent film and one of the few films of this era that has survived till date. Since the filmmakers never acquired the rights to Bram Stoker’s novel, there are some significant differences in the plot and characters. However, this is for the benefit of the film. It’s unpredictable, stressful and terrifying. Even if you find it difficult to sit through silent films, Nosferatu captures your attention with its creepy visuals and dancing shadows. This is a classic that every horror fan should watch at least once.

Dynasty (2005)

Made in the UK, the film is actually set in the Appalachian Mountains, North Carolina. Six women go there to explore the cave system. Sounds like a fun day doesn’t it? wrong. These ladies soon encounter some human-looking creatures, and they are not happy to see visitors.

The combination of claustrophobia and invading demons makes this film perfect for late night viewing. You will never want to go to a cave again.

Night of the Living Dead (1968)

If there is one movie we can call a true zombie classic, it is without question George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. Written, directed and edited by Romero, the film was shot on a budget of only $114,000 but grossed millions. The film begins with Barbara and her brother Johnny visiting their father’s grave after they are suddenly attacked by a strange man. Johnny dies, while Barbara can barely escape with her life. She is saved by a stranger and is forced to barricade a house as piles of the undead approach.

If the plot sounds familiar, that’s because it has been emulated time and again in the decades since the release of Night of the Living Dead. At the time, the film delivered the first true apocalyptic horror of its kind, ushering in a new era for the genre and setting the standard for horror films for decades to come. If you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favor and watch it today on Prime Video.

Hellraiser (1987)

Hellraiser was a wickedly wicked movie for its time. It is based on The Hellbound Heart – a 1986 novel by Clive Barker. Surprisingly, the writer also wrote the screenplay and directed the film, breathing Cenobites on the big screen. The plot revolves around a mysterious puzzle box that summons other creatures. They have forgotten the difference between suffering and pleasure and are capable of doing terrible things.

Hellraiser is a horror cult classic. In a decade when most horror villains were slashers, it offered something different, quirky and taboo. It might not have the same impact today as it did when it was released, but it’s still one of the best horror movies you need to watch on Amazon Prime.
