Roma is one of the most critically acclaimed Spanish films on Netflix. won three Oscars, two Golden Globes and three BAFTA Awards. It takes place in the Colonia Roma neighborhood of Mexico City in the 1970s. It follows the life of an indigenous homeowner in a middle-class family who takes care of their four young children. Events in the film bring them closer to each other, even as the family splits up.
The film is a semi-autobiographical take on the upbringing of writer and director Alfonso Cuarón. It is made even more authentic by the performance of lead actress Yalitza Aparicio, who was raised by a mother working as a maid. Her first film earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress, despite having no formal acting training.
7 Enos was the first Spanish film produced by Netflix in 2016. In it, four business partners try to come up with a plan that will take the blame for their financial crimes—and the seven years in prison that comes with it.

Among those prisoners is Jose Mujica, who became President of Uruguay in 2010. The horrific events portrayed in the film have an even greater impact, given what men will live to do in the future.

This Spanish thriller took home four of Spain’s prestigious Goya Awards in 2017. The Fury of a Patient Man (Tarde Para la Ira) tells the story of a mild-mannered laborer in Madrid who falls in love with a single mother working in a cafe. When her boyfriend is released from prison after serving eight years, things escalate quickly.

The result is a tense revenge flick that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last moment. It also gives a glimpse of some of the more modest parts of Spain’s capital and countryside.
Based on a true story, 100 Meters (100 Metropolis) tells the story of a man who is diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in the Basque Country of Spain. He has been told that within a year he will not be able to run 100 meters, so he has won the title.
To prove that he can overcome this dreaded disease, he decides to train for triathlon with the help of his father-in-law, who has recently attempted suicide. It is a wonderful story of pushing oneself in the face of insurmountable odds.
If you’re looking for more light-hearted entertainment, look no further than Off Course. A 2015 Spanish comedy about several uneducated youths who are unable to find suitable jobs in Spain’s poor economy. Attracted by the news of the abundant job opportunities in Germany, he moves to Berlin to try his luck.

Of course, things are never that easy. Getting a job proves more difficult than they imagined, and they are once again unemployed and lying to their families. Off Course is light and entertaining, but it is one of the few Spanish films on Netflix that explores the difficulties facing many young Spaniards today.
This Peruvian thriller is about two spies who go undercover to find the leader of the Shining Path, a communist revolutionary political party in Peru in 1992. After years of brutal guerrilla warfare, it was time to take action against the group, but the two spies must put aside their political differences to get the job done.

This indie sci-fi Spanish film didn’t make much of a splash when it first released on Netflix in late 2019, but it went on to become a cult hit during the worldwide COVID-19 quarantine. Though don’t let its low-budget appearance fool you, it’s a fantastically written and acted thriller that will leave you pondering its meaning for days after watching.
Virtually the entire film takes place in a vertical prison, with two inmates placed side by side in each room. Southern Spain is known for its beautiful beaches and great weather, but this action thriller focuses on the dirty underbelly of the region. When a former thief is forced to return to a life of crime to save his family from the local mafia, he comes face to face with his former boss and mentor.
What follows is a series of action-packed scenes with chase sequences, car races and shootouts. With beautiful views of Andalusia in the background, you can sit back and enjoy the show.
This Netflix original film comes from Argentina. It centers on a female police officer who is determined to solve the mystery of a missing person’s case. 14 years ago, a young girl, who was the officer’s best friend at the time, got lost in the Patagonian jungles. As a police officer investigates his friend’s disappearance, he encounters resistance from multiple fronts, and learns that his own life is in danger. There are some funny twists in this crime drama that will keep you guessing till the end.
The last entry on our list comes from famed director Guillermo del Toro, and once again this is one you wouldn’t want to see with kids. Dark Fairy Tail has some truly spectacular visuals that del Toro is now known for, along with a chilling screenplay and excellent acting.
The film takes place in the years following the Spanish Civil War, where a young girl named Ophelia escapes the harsh realities of war by exploring a mysterious labyrinth located on her family’s estate. It received widespread praise from both critics and audiences alike, and is easily included in the list of must-watch Spanish movies on Netflix.
