So the aliens are gone now, but that doesn’t mean things are safe. In fact, the new Cube monsters that plague the island are even more lethal than the other enemies. Fortunately, they only appear in new areas called sideways anomalies (as well as sideways areas), which are portals to alternate dimensions where gravity is less, and the area is full of deadly beasts. We’ll cover this in more detail below, but suffice it to say, these areas are high risk/high reward and provide you with an opportunity to walk out with useful gear.
In addition, you will come across sideways zones, which should not be confused with sideways anomalies. Sideways zones appear as a circular area on the map and appear in different locations in each match. These are similar to last season’s alien ships in that they will replace every match you play. This is essentially the opposite of a sideways anomaly, in which the alternate dimension is brought to the island instead of going to the alternate dimension.
Speaking of new gear, the map will now have different weapons from the previous season. You’ll come across the FAMAS Burst Rifle and other new additions, but the main weapons to look for are the ones you find in the sideways zone. From cube monsters you can collect some – wait for it – cube monster parts. These are items that can be used to upgrade sideways weapons, and you’ll definitely want to do this to take out your opponents.
Included are the Sideways Rifle and Sideways Minigun, which are just as powerful as they sound — even more so if you upgrade them. So be on the lookout for new base firearms as well as sideways weapons during Season 8.
As expected with a new season, map changes have been made with the latest fortnite Update. For the most part, the map itself remains intact, but now that the island is filled with cubes, a number of changes have been made to it. Of course, along with sideways anomalies, the new sideways areas are a major new addition, but there are even more significant additions to look forward to.
Surrounding the map are turret stations indicated by a dollar sign ($). Spend your gold bars setting up turret stations to defend against cubes in an attempt to bring back the vault. Once this is done as a community, players will be able to vote on which weapons appear for the rest of the season, which is an exciting new feature with an uncertain future. But it adds even more flavor to the ever-increasing changes. fortnite.
The map is now littered with sentient cubes that will eventually corrupt the island, hence the name. fortnite Season 8: Cubed. We know the cubes are made of dark energy and caused the cracks to open in The Sideways, though the mystery will be revealed over the course of the season. The cubes have also affected the wildlife around the island due to the presence of the Shadow Stones. These items appear among the wreckage of the Mothership crash and cause Shadow Floppers to spawn – which is a new fish variant.
For now, as the season progresses, you’ll want to defend yourself from cube monsters. Hopefully, we learn more about these mysterious cubes and their inspirations.
During Season 8, the quests/challenges are now grouped into punch cards. It won’t necessarily change the way you complete challenges, but it certainly looks neat within the menu. It appears that each character currently implemented has its own punch card with various quests for you to complete. The cool thing is that you can click on a character’s punch card to reveal his location on the map. Once you visit the character, they’ll give you all the quests they have available, and each one you complete gives you more XP than the last.
Daily and weekly punch cards are also available, although they are less complicated and appear the same as before.
Tying the entire season together is a new Battle Pass packed with goodies to unlock. It is set up just like the Battle Pass from Season 7, featuring a star system. As you earn XP, you accumulate stars, which can be spent on battle pass items in a non-linear way. It also gives you access to the new Paint a Tuna Fish feature, which allows you to customize skins within the game. To do this, you’ll need to find Rainbow Ink containers around the map. There are several colors to find around the map, and they work just like last season’s alien artifacts.
Most notably, the Battle Pass eventually gives you the Carnage skin, along with other character-themed cosmetics. Carnage is a beloved villain from the Spider-Man series and closely mirrors Venom, which you may be familiar with. You’ll need to reach page 10 of the Battle Pass to unlock the skin, which can take a long time, but it’s worth it for how cool it looks. You’ll also unlock some Emotions, a harvesting tool, loading screen, glider, and back bling, all themed after Carnage.
