Final Fantasy 14 is expanding its North American and European data centers and servers later this year.
Earlier today on January 14th, Final Fantasy 14 game director Naoki Yoshida published another comprehensive blog post, this time at Square Enix discussing current events in detail behind the scenes. Primarily, Yoshida announced that the North American data center would be expanded by August 2022, adding four new worlds to the servers, and then would see another upgrade in Summer 2023 with four new worlds.
A little earlier, though, the European data center for Final Fantasy 14 is seeing a similar expansion. In July, the data center will see the same growth as its North American counterpart, receiving four new worlds, and later next summer will see eight new worlds under an entirely new data center.
This is great news for struggling Final Fantasy 14 players in North America and Europe. Over the past few months, players around the world have been facing extensive queues just to log into the MMO, for which game director Yoshida has apologized endlessly. Now though, with these massive new upgrades for both struggling data centers, salvation finally appears to be in sight.
Additionally, Yoshida announced today that Final Fantasy 14 will return to the digital storefront on January 25. Last month in December, shortly after the Endwalker expansion began, digital sales for Final Fantasy 14 were suspended by Square Enix, in an effort to better manage the massive influx of players daily. It’s a relief that, with digital sales resuming for new players later this month, Square Enix seems to be in control of the situation.
Finally, Yoshida announced that the proposed data center travel system is moving to Update 6.1 in the coming months. The feature, which will allow players to travel to other worlds within the same data center, was postponed with crowds following Endwalker’s launch last year, but it’s not back and ready to go. Right now, we don’t have a release date for Patch 6.1, but it’s good to know that we’ll be seeing this new feature alongside regular story and quest content.
