We here at Santa Monica Studios couldn’t be more excited to finally share our first real look at God of War Ragnarok with all the fans who have been waiting so patiently for the update!

As you can see in the trailer, we’re picking up a few years after the events of God of War (2018). The cold winds of Fimbulwinter have arrived in Midgard, making the survival of Kratos, Atreus and Mimir even more challenging than ever in the Norse forests.

While the previous game built an enormous amount of trust and understanding between father and son, there is still a lot of complexity in their interactions – especially after the revelation and hidden prophecy of Atreus’ vast legacy only witnessed by Kratos.

Atreus is extremely curious. Like most young people, he wants to understand who he is more than anything. In this case, he wants to understand who he is. could Happen. The mystery of Loki’s role in the ensuing conflict is something Atreus cannot let go of. He wants to keep his family safe, but Atreus also doesn’t want to stand up and do anything while the conflict consumes the nine realms.

Kratos, still bearing the knowledge of his past mistakes, wants to leave Atreus the bloody lessons learned from his conflict with the gods. He wants to keep his son safe above all, and his confrontation with Baldur confirms the belief that further entanglements with Aesir will only lead to tragedy.

Kratos and Atreus must decide together which path they will take. Whatever they choose will define the fate of all those living in the nine realms as Ragnarok approaches.

pain and vengeance

We take a brief look at the two main opponents you’ll face in God of War Ragnarok: Freya and Thor.

Due to Kratos’ actions at the end of the previous game, Freya, a one-time ally-turned-enemy, has vowed vengeance for the death of her son, Baldur.

We wanted to remind players that Freya is not only a terrifyingly powerful user of Vanir magic, but that she is a formidable warrior in her own right. Enraged by Kratos’ theft of justice from his hand, Freya will take every weapon in her hand toward her son’s killer.

Also suffering the loss of his sons and half-brother, the target of Thor’s mythical bloodshed and wrath would be Kratos and Atreus.

Derogatoryly referred to by Mimir as “the greatest butcher bastard in the nine realms”, Thor earned his title as one of the most powerful Aesir gods, wiping out almost all giants at Odin’s orders.

While we don’t want to give away too much right now, we think even a glimpse of lightning-drenched Mjolnir will give you a hint of just how formidable Thor will be as an adversary.

you have my ex

It wouldn’t be a god of war without a healthy service of visceral and glorious war. You’ve only seen a hint of new attack abilities, a new runic summon for Atreus, and of course, the return of Kratos’ legendary weapons.

As a team we’ve worked hard to take our lessons from God of War (2018) and revamp Warfare to create a fresh, yet familiar feel. With God of War Ragnarok, one of our main goals was to advance the player’s choices in battle. Whether it’s through hard-hitting combos, mastery of the elements, or clever defensive tactics – you’ll have plenty of opportunity to fight alongside our pair in a way that feels uniquely expressive.

Whatever your choice of battle strategy, there will be enemies ready to wait in Ragnarok, God of War. The areas have hardened, and a whole host of new creatures from Norse mythology will test your skills. From the trailer you can see what happens when Kratos finds himself under the hoofs of a hunter or gets caught between the jaws of a drake, and that’s just the beginning.

With a wide cast of opponents, we aim to keep each match memorable, from small fights to big show-stopper bosses! We can’t wait to show you more as we get closer to release.

Onward to Asgard

Fans who played the final game know that they were able to visit six of the nine realms during their journey. In Ragnarok, God of War, you’ll be able to visit all nine!

God of War Ragnarok will take you to new areas from previously inaccessible Vannheim, Swartlefheim, and Asgard, as well as locations featured in the previous game. Exploring the realms will take you everywhere from lush, otherworldly forests to complex underground mining networks.

This next installment in the series will give you more diverse, beautiful and mysterious locations than any other God of War game.

see you next year!
