The first images of Nightmare Alley, Guillermo del Toro’s new thriller, have been released.
Based on the 1946 novel of the same name by William Lindsay Gresham, the story has already been adapted for the screen once in 1947. It follows manipulative carnival worker Stan Carlisle (this time played by Bradley Cooper), who joins forces with dangerous female fetish Dr. Lilith Ritter (Cate Blanchett). The new photos confirm that the film has set in the 40s, paying homage to the golden age of film noir. However, unlike the 1947 version, del Toro’s Nightmare Alley is rated R. Along with Blanchett and Cooper, the film also stars Toni Collette, Willem Dafoe and Rooney Mara.
Nightmare Alley will be released by Searchlight Pictures, a studio that falls under the Disney umbrella, and will therefore receive a special theatrical release like House of Mouse’s upcoming 2021 films.
It is del Toro’s first film since 2017. water size, which was nominated for 13 Academy Awards and won four—including Best Picture and Best Director—the filmmaker has set himself a daunting task to follow.
He’s also produced a remake of Pinocchio for Netflix, which is currently scheduled for release sometime this year (though a specific date has yet to be confirmed). The film’s voice cast includes Ewan McGregor, Tilda Swinton and Christoph Waltz.
