Playing a video game character may not be every serious actor’s dream. But on Thursday, when Nintendo announced it was teaming up with Illumination, the studio behind Despicable Me,Fans didn’t get enough of the news.
And no wonder: Check out this cast list. Chris Pratt as Mario, Jack Black as Bowser, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong and Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach. The film is animated, so the actors will only provide the voices of their characters, but still.
There were reactions from the fans.
Even what with this casting?
“So the 2 main characters… they just cast whoever was free?” One person wrote.
“What timeline are we living in?” Asked the official account for the game Between Us.
One Twitter user quipped, “The Mario cast is so unhinged that you could literally put a picture of any actor next to a character from the series and I would believe it was real.” (He is Jared Leto, and to our knowledge, he is not in the film.)
Chris Pratt as Mario
The casting of Chris Pratt as Mario garnered a lot of attention and cracked jokes. One tweet remembered Pratt in the Jurassic World movies, comparing him to Mario and his dinosaur sidekick, Yoshi.
Mario’s exuberant Italian heritage was at the center of some jokes. “I’m fine with the casting of Chris Pratt as Mario, as long as it’s extremely offensive and Nintendo has to issue an apology to the Italian community for it,” the person said.
Jack Black as Bowser
The casting of comedian Jack Black as Bowser also garnered a lot of attention.
“Learning that Jack is the Black Bowser was far more satisfying than any smash reveal,” wrote one person on Twitter.
Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong
Naturally, the casting of Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong was not forgotten.
One person wrote, “The only casting announcement for a Super Mario Bros. movie that makes complete sense to me is Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong.”
“Frank of Sausage Party has the same voice actor as Donkey Kong from the Super Mario movie,” noted the very specific identical voice actor Twitter account.
