It’s been speculated for some time that Apple will soon reveal a new MacBook Pro, built around a more powerful M1X (or perhaps M2) chip. Two possible unveiling timelines were suggested, with famed Apple leaker John Prosser previously speculating that Apple would make an announcement at WWDC 2021 on June 7.
We apparently didn’t see the new machines at the event, which leaves a rough estimate provided by Bloomberg, based on supply chain leaks that suggest that both the new MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch models will have one Mini-led display. Those display components won’t be shipped to factories until the third quarter of 2021, according to Apple supplier Global Lighting Technologies, which will make a tight transition for the devices to hit shelves during the same period.

a possible 2022 release
A paid DigiTimes report adds more weight to the Q3 release for the latest generation of MacBook Pros, though the phrase in the article may refer to the previously mentioned components, rather than just fully assembled units. Nerdshala provided snippets of the report, which read, “According to industry sources, Apple is expected to roll out two new MacBook Pro models later in 2021, with shipments beginning in the third quarter”.
If these shipments only refer to components then there’s a real chance we won’t see the updated MacBook Pro model available for purchase until 2022. However, all things considered, it may be worth the wait.
There are several predictions that the new MacBook Pro models will be powered by a more powerful sequel to the popular M1 SoC (system-on-a-chip). This anticipated upgrade, which is currently being dubbed the M1X or M2 chip, makes sense considering the full updated Mac line and even the latest iPad Pro 12.9 2021 uses existing M1 hardware.
As impressive as the M1 is, by no means is the most powerful products in Apple’s lineup given the same hardware as the MacBook Air 2021, with recent rumors swirling that the M1X will give the RTX 3070 laptop GPU a run for its money could. Which would make it a perfect buy for graphic designers and people in the VFX industry.
Production of this new SoC may delay the release of both models of the new MacBook Pro due to the ongoing global shortage of silicon. We will know soon when there is an official announcement, but to avoid disappointment, take all the rumors with a pinch of salt.
