but the peacock free Tier will stream programming for the bulk of the Tokyo Olympics starting Friday.

Comcast-owned NBCUniversal’s Peacock was just one of a flurry of new streaming services from the tech and media giant, launching over the past year and a half. Competitors include other new services such as Disney Plus, apple tv plus, Paramount Plus (reform of CBS All Access) and WarnerMediaof HBO Max, as well as vets like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Hulu.

But Peacock is unusual among these rivals because it has this free tier. It is also unusual among the crop of new services in that it has live sports and news; Most of the latest streaming services are completely focused on video-on-demand entertainment along the lines of Netflix. Other difference: Mayur has “channels” of TV, but these are not livestreams of his network. Instead, they are curated feeds of short programming or full episodes, organized around a theme.

So is Peacock worth paying for? All the finer details are below, but basically: Thanks to the free tier, it doesn’t cost anything to try it for yourself. But Paying for Peacock may be a good fit for you if: you really want to watch The Office or any of its other paid shows or movies; You are a WWE Superfan who wants to access all that programming; Or you’ve been spoiled by Netflix for hating commercials.

How much does a peacock cost?

Peacock has three tiers: a limited one that is free, an all-inclusive one that’s $5 per month with ads, and an all-inclusive one that’s $10 per month without ads.

The free tier limits how much you can watch. For example, Peacock offers only select episodes of its originals for free, withholding the rest within its paywall. Free accounts can watch the first two seasons of The Office but no more. And although there are many movies available on this free tier, some – including Boss Baby 2 – are blocked until you upgrade. This limited free tier has access to nearly two-thirds of Peacock’s total catalog of movies, current season TV, TV classics, curated daily news, sports, Hispanic programming, and curated channels.

The paid tier is basically an all access pass to the full catalog on the service. Peacock Premium is $5 per month or $50 per year with ads, or you can upgrade to Peacock Premium Plus for ad-free viewing at $10 per month or $100 per year (this Premium Plus tier is also the only which lets you download to watch offline).

Advertisement levels must contain no more than five minutes of ads per hour.

What deals does Peacock offer?

Some people can get discounts that deduct the cost of Peacock if they are already customers of certain cable companies. Peacock gives Comcast X1 and Flex customers the paid versions of the service at a $5 discount. So if they want to watch with ads, they don’t pay anything for Peacock Premium; If they want to watch ad-free, they have to pay $5 per month for Premium Plus.

Cox customers also get that $5 deal. Mayur has said that it is working on a partnership to offer this discount to a wider range of consumers.

In January, NBCUniversal said it entered into an agreement with cable company Charter Communications for spectrum video and broadband customers to receive an extended free trial for Peacock. Those offers haven’t started yet.

Pricing runs the gamut in Peacock’s competition.

Among services that have ad-supported options, Hulu is $6 per month with ads and $12 per month ad-free. CBS All Access charges $6 for its tier with ads and $10 for the ad-free version.

By comparison, Netflix, which has no ads, offers its cheapest tier at $9 per month, while its most popular plan is $14. apple tv plus is $5 per month, Disney Plus is $7 per month, and HBO Max is $15 per month. None of them contain ads.

And none of these competitors—whether with or without ads—offers a free tier like Peacock.
