We weren’t given the price of these new Sony phones when the Sony Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III were launched, but a new leak probably fills that gap. We hope this is wrong, though, because these are some astronomical values.
As spotted by a Reddit user, US-based store Focus has listed both new flagship Sony phones – the Xperia 1 III listed for $1,298 (which converts to around £920, AU$1,680), and the Xperia The 5 III has a price of $998 attached (which equates to approximately £710, AU$1,290).

Take these prices with a pinch of salt, as it’s possible they’re just placeholder prices, and you can’t order a phone for it just yet. That said, the costs for placeholders are a bit too specific, and only recently added, so these may be real values.
For reference, the Xperia 1 II costs $1,199 / £1,099 (about AU$1,840) and the Xperia 5 II costs $949 / £799 (approximately AU$1,350), so if the listed prices are accurate we’re seeing a slight increase for both. Huh.
This is surprising because one of our main issues with both of those phones was the high price, and the Mark-3 series doesn’t offer a large number of upgrades.
the price is right (no)
It’s no secret that Sony Mobile is ‘going through some stuff’ – according to Statista, it sold 2.9 million smartphones in 2020. That’s a lot of devices – I certainly didn’t sell that many last year – but it’s a huge decrease compared to last year. 14.6 million in 2016.
Sony puts out about four phones per year (for global markets, at least), and in 2020 the Xperia 5 II and 1 II were two of them — this year the Mark-3 versions will fill those boots. If both of its top devices are as incredibly expensive as these numbers show, it’s no wonder Sony is struggling to get people to buy their devices.
The budget market in particular is becoming incredibly competitive, and companies constantly trying to offer impressive specs at low prices will struggle if Sony continues to offer its top specs at top prices.
