A bizarre Genshin Impact PR stunt involving Elon Musk appears to have been canceled following community backlash.
Earlier today, the official Genshin Impact Twitter account told fans that in celebration of its two million followers, it would be hosting a community challenge. That challenge asked players to follow another account – named Ella Musk – with a ‘reward’ to a certain number of followers.
To host the challenge, the official account, usually named Pymon after the game’s supporting partner, changed its display name to Genshin Impact. The name will return to its original state in the first rewards tier unlocked at 500,000 followers. With one million followers, the official account will follow Musk on Twitter. At 30 lakhs, Musk will be invited to stream the game, and at 50 lakhs, will be invited to visit the MiHoYo headquarters.
It’s hard to see how the first two tiers create rewards for the community, and depending on your point of view of Elon Musk, it’s potentially difficult to find value in the third and fourth rewards. Unfortunately for Mihoyo, the players haven’t been particularly impressed by the challenge. The tweet has already been deleted, possibly spelling the end of the challenge, but the community is still making its sentiments known.
a twitter user said the community would “never forget” the challenge, while a popular updated account Celebrated Message deletion. On Reddit, the top comment on the post embedded above asked if the tweet was a joke, with others suggesting the move made the game look out of touch. Musk himself seems to be happy, however, lately. telling his followers That he “can’t wait to be at Genshin Impact.”
