To do something about climate change denial content on YouTube last year. The search giant said on Thursday that it is changing its monetization policy regarding such content and ads.
Google will restrict monetization of ads and content that “contradicts the well-established scientific consensus about the existence and causes of climate change,” according to Google Ads Help Page. This policy affects advertisers, publishers and YouTube creators and will take effect in November.
The company said, “When evaluating content against this new policy, we will carefully consider the context in which the claims are made, distinguishing between content that states a false claim as fact, that content who reports on or discusses that claim.” “We will continue to allow advertisements and monetization on other climate-related topics, including public debates on climate policy, the isolated impacts of climate change, new research, and more.”
Google says it consulted experts on the topic, including people who contributed United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change evaluation report.
