Citing an “uncertain global economic outlook,” the CEO said Google will slow its recruitment pace in the second half of 2022. Google added a whopping 10,000 employees in the second quarter, Pichai said.

The Google chief went on to say that the company is consolidating “where investments overlap” and streamlining its processes. In other words: work harder otherwise.

Technology companies of all shapes and sizes have laid-off workers in the face of the impending recession. This includes Google, Microsoft, Tesla and other corporate giants, as well as relatively small enterprises such as Bird, Rivian as well as Coinbase. Pichai’s memo does not mention layoffs, but phrases such as “optimization” and “consolidation” tend to evoke similar thoughts.

Alphabet, for its part, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the memorandum. His net income for the first quarter fainted 8% year on year to $16.44 billion. The company will report second-quarter earnings on July 26.
