Musletter’s arrival comes at a time when smaller newsletter platforms including Substack, Ghost, Review and others have become increasingly popular among journalists and writers, as opposed to following the direction of larger news outlets and working independently.
When Nerdshala Reached out to Google’s Region 120 for a comment on Musletter, a company spokesperson explained that the project is still in its early stages and one of several experiments in development at the search giant’s internal R&D division.
Still, there’s much to be learned about the new newsletter platform from the Mozlater website that suggests creators can monetize Google Drive in a way that sets Google’s newsletter offering apart from the competition. For example, in addition to writing newsletters in Google Docs, other software from the company can also be used to provide readers with additional content such as presentations in Google Slides or spreadsheets in Google Sheets.
By creating a public profile in Google Drive, creators will essentially have a landing page where they can show their work and market memberships to their readers. It will be free for musicians to use Musitor, but they can easily monetize their content by offering their readers a paid subscription.
The newsletter may also provide a new way for Google to sell ads because the ads placed inside newsletters created on the platform can be much more specific and directly linked to their content.
