The question of who first invented the USB flash drive is disputed. Pua Khein-Seng from Malaysia claims the title and is reportedly recognized by locals as the “Father of the Flash Drive” while similar stories have surfaced from companies in Singapore, China and elsewhere.

The first US patent for a USB flash drive was filed in April 1999 by the Israeli firm M-Systems (bought by SanDisk in 2006), which teamed up with IBM to market the 8 MB “DiskOnKey” in North America. In the same year, Singapore-based Trek 2000 International also began selling their 8 MB “ThumbDrive”.
