Medium today announced its third and final acquisition of the year: knowable, an audio-based learning platform featuring courses such as podcasts from experts such as Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, NASA astronaut Scott Kelly and food journalist Mark Bittman.
Medium’s other acquisitions this year include Projector, a browser-based graphic design tool, and Glos, a social book-reading app.
As the podcasting and live audio industries expand, Noble Audio will help Medium meet the needs of people seeking education. Noble co-founder Warren Schaefer will join Medium as Vice President of Audio, and the rest of the Knowable team will follow. Schaefer told Nerdshala that the Medium and Known team has already started working together on complementary initiatives and will share more details in early 2022.
“Publishing on Knowable gives experts and thought leaders — including those already involved in Medium — an easy way to add a new, monetization format to share their work,” Schaefer told Nerdshala. “Learnable lessons sit between social audio, which is largely ephemeral and non-monetable, and podcasts and audiobooks, which are far more labor-intensive. Noble handles the heavy lifting on the production side to help its creators deliver great sound, even when they are new to audio.”
Launched in 2019 with funding from Andreessen Horowitz, Upfront, First Round and Initialized – the platform charges $9.99 per month for access to more than 100 courses, though in celebration of the acquisition, its prices are set annually until the end of the year. Has dropped to $25. , As of the acquisition, Noble will remain a standalone platform, but Noble may be included in future Medium subscription bundles.
“The number one reason people say they listen to podcasts is to learn new things, and Noble and Medium are pioneering a new audio experience to better meet this need, both for creators and listeners. equally,” Schaefer said.
