Metroid One of the most respected and acclaimed series on Nintendo’s roster. MetroidAttracting Nintendo’s younger audience the aesthetic has walked a fine line between a cartoonish- and a moodier, gothic brand of sci-fi. it is strongest when it bends towards the latter, and Fear is no different. The game is beautiful when it’s spooky: tunnels of blue glass divide swirling lava plumes; Abandoned alien temple nestled under purple leaves; The twinkling white light emanates from the vents of useless swirling air. The 2D perspective lets developer MercuryStream do some incredible work in the background, and these blueprints hold up to scrutiny during the occasional jump in 3D perspective.
The gameplay is classic Metroidvania, honed to perfection. Samus retains his blaster, firing small balls of light when you hit the Y with the hammer. This blaster also opens doors, like the Goomba, patrolling along the walls and ceiling of the space station while vaporizing any projectile-firing wildlife. Because Metroidvania games are all about the doors. They’re closed-room dollhouses that only new skills can unlock: Spider Magnet lets you scale bright blue walls; The invisibility cloak lets you crawl behind a CCTV-operated hatch. The key to these games is that they require you to double down on yourself to continually progress—and, for the perfectionists among us, to get all those sweet energy tanks and missile power-ups. Great Metroidvania titles have always offered master classes in game design: making the player feel that their quest is autonomous; In fact, they are unintentional puppets of the designer.

It’s a shame, because although it would have been better to be chased by a giant sandworm, running away from EMMI-fear-based gameplay, in the words of Producer Yoshio Sakamoto-Still have some of its strongest moments. EMMI-patrol areas are bathed in a shimmering gray light and soundtracked by a high droning tone. The robots slam onto the surfaces of the space station, while Samus falls out of their reach – becoming caught in their grip leads to almost certain death. Yet next to S-AX, one of the greatest villains of all time, who has the neurotic habit of being afraid of literally what you’re trying to be, it’s hard not to get overwhelmed.
