MongoDB draws attention to its data platform for developers

At its annual MongoDB World ConferenceMongoDB today announced a number of updates to the database of the same name, including the addition of a request for encrypted data without first decrypting it, columnstore indexing, and a new SQL interface. But perhaps most importantly, the company is using the event to talk about what it describes as its “developer data platform.”

How MongoDB newly appointed CTO Mark Porter told me that he considers today’s announcements to be the culmination of the last four or five years of work on MongoDB. Although the company started as a pure database service bringing a new type of architecture to market, in recent years it has expanded the capabilities of this core service by adding features such as integrated search, acquiring the Realm mobile application development platform, launching the Atlas data lake service, and more. other.

“We’ve been so successful at these things that we’re putting them all together into a developer data platform,” Porter said. “We leave them composite, we leave them standards-based – JSON, Parquet, whatever you might think – and yet what we’re doing is taking these components and extracting them all. together into a toolkit that all reviews tell us is what developers want to write for modern apps.”

He stressed that while the company is talking about it as a unified platform for the first time, it’s not necessarily new features and products. In his opinion, to call something a platform—a word that is often used too loosely these days—is something on which to build something, on which the different parts work together naturally, but still provide compatibility. In addition, he noted that a modern platform must also be managed and secure.

Speaking of interoperability, MongoDB is launching a new integration with startup Jamstack Vercel, for example, this week that will allow developers to more easily use MongoDB as a database to build websites and applications on top of the Vercel platform. And while people have obviously created integrations like this in the past, Porter called it an “intimate” and “elegant” integration where both companies worked on their products to provide a better developer experience.

Another new feature worth highlighting is the company’s new Atlas SQL interface. MongoDB of course offers its own query language, MQL. But, for better or worse, data scientists are mostly familiar with SQL, and Mongo is aiming for more in that market. Now, to be clear, this is only a read-only interface, so the set of use cases is limited. Porter also emphasized that the company has no plans to abandon MQL.

For these analytic workloads, MongoDB is now also adding columnstore indexing, which will be available later this year. This allows users to create and maintain custom-built indexes and query them much faster than before (“hundreds of times faster,” Porter said). The company is also adding collections of time series to the database to help developers build applications such as monitoring physical systems or tracking financial data.

However, the highlight of today’s release is a pre-release version of the requested encryption. This allows users to encrypt their data on the client side and store it as randomized encrypted data in the database while still being able to perform expressive queries on it. MongoDB claims this is the first time the database offers this capability, which is outside the scope of most existing encryption solutions that only encrypt data in transit and at rest, but not when it is in use. This is partly because the encryption used is complex and adds quite a bit of overhead. In addition, MongoDB claims that this also puts the burden on developers to understand cryptography, and even then, querying is limited. Porter stressed that this is not homomorphic encryptionstandard technology for constructing such functions.
