Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon reveals the video behind a truly historic moment in video game history: Scorpion’s classic “Get Over Here!” The concept of. Spear move.
The undisputed mascot of the prolific Mortal Kombat series is the undead ninja scorpion, and his long-reaching spear move — and its accompanying catcher — is one of the most iconic moments in gaming. And now, thanks to a two-minute clip shared by series creator Ed Boon to celebrate the upcoming 30th anniversary of Mortal Kombat, we get to see how it came to life. Check it out:
Mortal Kombat will be 30 years old in 2022. But 2021 has been 30 years since we’ve actually been working on the game. To celebrate, sharing some behind-the-scenes stuff seemed like a fun idea. This clip shows how we created Scorpion’s iconic (get over here!) spear move. (1 of 9) pic.twitter.com/3f1tdvjG9R12 October 2021
In an answer thread, Boon gives some useful context on what’s being discussed in the video above, including a conversation between Boon and co-creator John Tobias. At one point, you can apparently hear Boon asking rhetorically, “You know what a good ass move would be?”, and it’s actually pretty cool to see the germ that eventually becomes Such A Thing. Go.
You also get to see the moment Boon and Tobias decide to give this move their pullback effect which almost always takes the attacker into an uppercut. Boone further explains that the acting actor was required to keep his movements simple in order to reduce the frame for the 1991 hardware constraints, and you can see that Boon and Tobias try to force the actor to throw the spear at chest height. So that the opponents of ducks can dodge it.
As we approach Mortal Kombat’s big birthday next year, Boone says he looks forward to releasing more “Fly on the Wall” videos from the series’ history, and yes. Please do.
