When it comes to online streaming, Twitch It is largely synonymous with activity, although people like Facebook and YouTube are trying to take some of it away from the platform. While Twitch viewership declined during the September boycott, people felt that little was being done about the “hate raid”, the website still being broadcast for gamers and for the community to meet and talk to streamers. However, given that Facebook didn’t enter the streaming ring until 2018, the platform has some catching up to do, and is possibly even competing with YouTube.
On top of the overall statistics, and the amount of hours people devoted to Twitch, the report also detailed which games were the most popular to watch. MOBA games like League of Legends And Dota 2 were among the top four channels, with the former increasing 98% to a total of 205 million hours of viewership, and the latter increasing by 189%, all for October.
Despite this, there has been some controversy surrounding Twitch over the past few months. Most recently were the aforementioned hate raids, in which broadcasters and their communities were subjected to a flood of toxic viewers, inciting hate speech and disrupting streams. Twitch offered some countermeasures to the raid, which is a step in the right direction, but many felt the deed was too little too late. Some big streamers are jumping ship on alternative platforms, too. However, the figures above show that the Amazon-owned site is still the reigning champion of streaming.
