ungoogled-chromium is Google Chromium, with no dependency on Google Web Services. It also has some settings to increase privacy, control, and transparency (almost all of which require manual activation or enabling).

ungoogled-chromium preserves Chromium’s default capabilities as closely as possible. Unlike other forks of Chromium that have their own vision of a web browser, ungoogled-chromium is essentially a replacement for Chromium.

Functions

  • Replacing many web domains in source code with non-existing alternatives ending in qjz9zk (known as domain substitution; see docs/design.md for details)
  • Removing binaries from source code (known as removing binaries; see docs/design.md for details)
  • Disable features specific to Google domains (e.g. Google Host Detector, Google URL Tracker, Google Cloud Messaging, Google Hotwording, etc.)
  • This includes disabling Safe Browsing. Refer to the FAQ for justification.
  • Add many new command line switches and chrome://flags entries to tweak features that are disabled by default. See docs/flags.md for a complete list.

Feature Improvement:

  • Use HTTPS by default if no URL scheme is specified (e.g. omnibox, bookmarks, command line).
  • Add the Suggestions URL text box in the search engine editor (chrome://settings/searchEngines) to customize the search engine suggestions.
  • Add more URL schemes allowed for saving page schemes.
  • Add the “No Search” Omnibox search engine to allow disabling search.
  • Add a custom cross build configuration and wrapper for Chromium. It currently supports many Linux, macOS, and Windows distributions. (See docs/design.md for system details.)
  • Make all popups tabs
  • Disable automatic formatting of URLs in the omnibox (e.g. removing https://, hiding certain options)
    • Disable intranet redirect detector (rogue DNS queries)
  • This interrupts the detection of the Anchor Portals, but the Anchor Portals still work.
  • (Iridium browser feature change) Prevent URLs with trk: scheme from connecting to the Internet
    • Also prevents attempts to connect any URLs with the qjz9zk top-level domain (used when replacing the domain).
  • (Iridium and Inox feature change) Prevent IPv6 address pinging when IPv6 availability is detected. Instead, see the –set-ipv6-probe-false flag above to customize the behavior.
  • (For Windows) Do not set zone ID for uploaded files
