Netflix is planning to shoot two Red Notice sequels back-to-back, with the aim of starting production in 2023.
According to Deadline, writer and director Rawson Marshall Thurber has already begun writing for him and Netflix is looking to bring back all three leads — Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot — to reprise their roles.
Deadline says that several new characters will also be introduced to introduce the ensemble cast for a heist film like the Ocean’s Eleven franchise. Netflix hasn’t released any official comment yet.
Netflix’s most watched movie of all time
Red Notice sees Johnson’s FBI agent and Reynolds’ art thieves team up to thwart another thief, played by Gadot. Despite the simple premise, Red Notice resonated very well with audiences.
Netflix told Business Insider that it has amassed 364.02 million hours of viewership within 28 days of its release, making it the most-watched Netflix film of all time.
However, it did not fare as well with critics. It has an average score of only 37% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 166 reviews, while the audience score is a more impressive 92%.
Given that it’s already committed to two sequels and is filming them back-to-back, Netflix clearly has a lot of faith in Red Notice as an IP. Time will tell whether the sequel will keep fans’ interest or win over the dissidents of the first film, though.
