On Tuesday, NordicTrack unveiled its latest gadget: voice-controlled dumbbells. The NordicTrack iSelect Adjustable Dumbbells are a set of voice-controlled adjustable dumbbells operated via an Alexa device. At $429, the iSelect adjustable dumbbells weigh from 5 to 50 pounds equal to 20 sets, which can be electronically converted to an Alexa-enabled device with a simple voice command.
I was able to see a demo of these dumbbells in action, and it was impressive how quickly the weights adjusted when Alexa followed the requested commands. You can use voice commands to tell the device how much weight to set the dumbbell, increase or decrease the weight, and request preset weights for specific exercises. You can preset individual weights for 15 different exercises in the app. So all you have to do is say: “Alexa, set a weight for the biceps curl,” and Alexa will automatically adjust the weight for that exercise to your personal settings.
The iSelect Adjustable Dumbbell can also be adjusted manually if you don’t have an Alexa device. The weight tray has a dial on the top that allows you to quickly adjust the weight just by turning the knob. Like other NordicTrack equipment, these dumbbells come with a 30-day iFit subscription, which gives you access to thousands of workouts taught by iFit instructors. However, you don’t need to pay a subscription ($39 per month plus tax) to use Dumbbells.
NordicTrack intentionally designed these dumbbells with a square base because it wanted to ensure users had more stability during floor-based exercises. The dumbbells also conveniently come with a compact weight tray that serves as the base where you adjust the weight.
