“Infertility testing has traditionally been based on a female-first approach, resulting in male infertility being largely ignored,” said Barrett Cowan, co-founder and chief medical officer of Offspring Health. “Yet, in fact, in half of all cases where couples have problems getting pregnant, male infertility is one of the factors.”

Pure co-founded Descendant Health with her husband Cowan following their careers as Medical Technology Executive and Male Fertility Specialist, respectively. Since fertility testing has traditionally focused heavily on the female component, they acknowledged how underestimated the male was and a general lack of knowledge about the important role of males in the conception process. Pure told TechCrunch that one in eight couples have problems conceivingas well as in more than 50% of cases, the male factor of fertility is involved.

Progeny wants to continue to educate people about the importance of male fertility testing and help people understand that the male condition can be treated and optimized by providing additional treatment options for couples trying to conceive, according to Pure.

Offspring assists with a male fertility assessment and treatment plan to optimize sperm quality through its Male Factor Management telemedicine platform, which provides virtual visits, home diagnostics, and face-to-face consultations. The startup’s services include baseline assessments, semen preservation, semen analysis, miscarriage counseling, diagnostic testing, vasectomy reversal, and gender confirmation assistance.

What makes the Offspring different, Pure says, is that it provides education and engagement built into its digital platform or in-home diagnostic testing.

The company will use the latest funding to scale treatment for male patients in the United States, where the service was launched in Colorado, Pure said. Pure also intends to expand its services, increase its team of specially trained doctors and establish partnerships. It currently provides assistance in 26 states and has a team of 15 people.

Descendants of Health says its team is made up of reproductive urologists who work directly with OB/GYNs, fertility centers and fertility benefit managers to offer a comprehensive home care solution focused solely on male fertility testing and treatment.

“This is a critical time for infertile couples, especially with the recent decision to dismiss Roe v. Wade, which leaves many questions unanswered about how this will affect the fertility process,” Pure said.

Several digital health executives also participated in the latest round, including Merative CEO Jerry McCarthy, former Amazon Health Solution senior vice president Laurie McGraw, and Don Holtzworth, a serial entrepreneur and chair of the advisory board for UNC Gilling’s School of Public Health. The company declined to comment on its valuation.

“Offspring health focuses on the male component of infertility, which has historically been underestimated,” said Sean Ellis, managing partner at Distributed Ventures. “Through the Offspring Health program, couples are having a more inclusive, balanced and comprehensive path to fertility that can accelerate the path to pregnancy.”
