Sony Group Corp. has suggested in the past that it is looking for a new service to compete with Xbox Game Pass, and a recent retail change is causing further speculation. According to some retailers in the United Kingdom, Sony is pulling playstation now cards from store shelves and will stop selling them.

British retailer Game has confirmed that Wednesday, January 19, will be the last day UK gamers can purchase PlayStation Now cards before picking up theirs. The retailer has said that point-of-sale PlayStation Now cards in all game stores will be removed from customer-facing areas and ESD will be replaced to restrict sales of the product. Digital Bay will be changed in the same way as part of this week’s “Business Update,” with January 21st being the last official day when gamers in the UK can purchase PlayStation Now cards.


A recent Bloomberg report suggests that PlayStation is currently looking to rival Xbox Game Pass with a service under the codename “Spartacus.” Similar to Xbox Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate, this new service will include multiple levels to allow PlayStation fans to customize their experience. PlayStation Plus currently exists as the primary method for PlayStation fans to connect to their games online, while PlayStation Now is a game subscription service offered on the Sony platform.

PlayStation Now’s current library offers several major titles such as Detroit: Be Human, God of war, And Horizon Zero Dawn, One thing missing on PlayStation Now offered by Xbox Game Pass, such as the release of first-party titles forza horizon 5, hello infinity, And Microsoft Flight Simulator first day. If a new service replaces PlayStation Now after these major retail changes, it’s unclear whether the replacement will offer the upcoming PlayStation Now spec. Gran Turismo 7, Final Fantasy 16, or Marvel’s Wolverine first day.

PlayStation fans who take their games online and have access to the extensive PlayStation Now catalog currently have to subscribe to a monthly subscription to two different services. It has recently been suggested that Sony may want to keep the PlayStation Plus branding while doing away with PlayStation Now promotional material, and that the move to remove PlayStation Now cards from UK retailers follows several steps to phase out the product. Could be the first one. Although nothing has yet been confirmed as a replacement for PlayStation Now, PlayStation may be gearing up to announce a new subscription service or the addition of PlayStation Now to PlayStation Plus.

The game retail stores in the UK are similar to EB Games and Gamestop in North America, but are owned by the Fraser Group, a company that also oversees retail chains in the area such as House of Fraser and European Golf. Leadership at GameStop, EB Games, and other retail chains hasn’t confirmed whether they’ll have to take PlayStation Now products off their shelves, but the game could be the first of many to do so.
