The latest Pokémon game from the mainstream Pokémon Scarlet & Violet series is coming to Nintendo Switch on November 18, 2022.

BUT trailer because the game came out this morning, revealing new details about the ninth generation of the classic franchise. Most importantly, this guy. His name is Lechonk.

Okay, okay, Lechonk might not be the most important discovery. Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet will be the franchise’s first open-world RPGs based on the recent Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Arceus is not real open world game – you travel through base camps, then run around a large but limited area, meeting Pokémon from all over the world. So we’ll take these “open world” claims at face value.

In other exciting (but not at the Lechonk level) news: this will be the first Pokémon game with multiplayer functionality – up to four people can team up and explore together (unfortunately, the trailer and accompanying Press release are pretty vague, so… it’s not entirely clear what that means yet).

Depending on which of the two games players choose, they will face another Pokémon Professor, Sada in Pokémon Scarlet and Turo in Pokémon Violet. The Internet already loves them.

We already knew about three Gen 9 starter Pokémon: Sprigatito, the Grass Cat, Fuecoco, the Fire Crocodile, and Quaxly, the Donald Duck knockoff. But we get important new information about these friends in their pokedex entriesbasically, such a tidbit: “Quaxly is neat, and especially does not like to get his head dirty.”

In addition to Lechonok, we met two more new friends. Smoliv, the little olive Pokemon, is adorable. According to the Pokédex description, Smoliv loves to sunbathe. Then there’s Pawmi, an electric mouse that generates electricity by rubbing its cheeks. Sounds too familiar, if you know what I mean.

In “Pokémon Sword & Shield”, some fan-favorite Pokémon were initially left out of the game, causing controversy (justice for bulbasaur). So far in trailers we’ve seen views like (deep breath) Magnemite, Lucario, Hoppip, Drifloon, Combi, Meowth, Pikachu, Larvitar, Bagon, Quirogonal, Fletchling, Fluffy, Chutle, Flabebe, Venonat, Koalossal, Marini, Lurantis and Gengar.

Finally, the new trailer introduced us to the main version-exclusive Legendary Pokémon of this generation: Corydon and Miraydon. But honestly, they are nothing compared to Lechonk.
