Real Steel movie is getting a Disney Plus series from director Shawn Levy

Hugh Jackman starrer science-fiction boxing film Real Steel is getting a lot of love Disney Plus Chain.

The original film is set in an alternate 2020 version where human boxers have been replaced by robots. An ex-boxer (Jackman) and his young son (Dakota Goyo) reunite years later and discover an obsolete but intact sparring robot in a junkyard that turns out to be much more than it seems.

Real Steel was released in 2011 and was directed by Sean Levy, who is returning as executive producer for the upcoming series. Along with Jackman, it starred Evangeline Lilly as a boxing gym owner and Anthony Mackie, and the film was a box office hit, grossing over $300 million upon release. It is based on Richard Matheson’s short story Steele, which was published in 1956 and was also adapted into a 1963 Twilight Zone episode.


After the film was recently added to Netflix, it found new audiences, and Levi said he was talking to Jackman About a sequel. No casting information has been announced yet, so it’s unclear if Jackman and co. will return.

Levy’s next project is The Adam Project, a sci-fi film for Netflix starring Ryan Reynolds, Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Garner and Zoe Saldana. He most recently directed Free Guy, which also starred Reynolds, and has directed several episodes of the upcoming Stranger Things Season 4,
