Sir Ridley Scott? Not a fan of superhero movies, it seems. The director of Alien fires both barrels in ubiquitous, spandex-clad style in a new interview time limit,
“They’re fucking boring as shit,” Scott said, clearly not mincing his words. “Their scripts aren’t good. I think I’ve done three great scripted superhero movies. One would be Alien with Sigourney Weaver. One would be Gladiator, and one would be [Blade Runner],” He continued.
But Ridley is perhaps less keen that the current trend of weak stories is punctuated by special effects—something he also describes as “boring.”
“So, why don’t superhero movies have better stories?” Ridley thought. “They’re mostly saved by special effects, and it’s getting boring for everyone who works with special effects, if you have the money.”
Away from superhero territory, Scott has revealed that a Gladiator sequel is in the works.
“It’s already written. We have a good footprint, a nice, logical place to go. You can’t just do another Gladiator type of movie…. to pick up the ball and keep it going There are enough components from the first one,” revealed the follow-up to the 2000 epic starring Scott Russell Crowe.
Scott’s latest film House of Gucci is set to release on November 24 in the US and November 26 in the UK. The legendary director is also ready to steer the kitbag. Based on Napoleon Bonaparte’s rise to power, Joaquin Phoenix is set to play the French ruler, while Jodie Comer will star alongside Phoenix as Josephine Bonaparte.
