Russian authorities have announced that they have dismantled the infamous Revil ransomware gang and arrested several of its members.

as reported by BBC, the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation or FSB for short, said in a statement that the cybercriminal group had “existed” after a recent law enforcement operation.

Although the US was prepared to offer a reward of up to $10 million for information about the Reville ransomware gang, it now appears that none of its members will be extradited following their arrest. According to the FSB, the agency used information provided by the US to take down the group and end its operations forever.

In addition to confiscating 426m rubles (about $5.5m), including close to $600k in cryptocurrency, the FSB also seized 20 “premium cars” from the group.

Although the group shut down and essentially shut down all of its websites in September last year, Revil is one of the most notorious ransomware gangs of all time.

Revil was responsible for a major ransomware attack on meat processor JBS, which led to a complete shutdown of production over the Memorial Day holiday last year. However, the group struck again in 2021 over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, when it attacked IT management firm Kasia, affecting hundreds of organizations including several managed service providers and their customers.

While it appears that Reville relaunched its operations under the name Blackmatter last summer, the news that the group has been disbanded will come as a relief to many of the organizations it has targeted over the years. did.

We’ll have to wait and see if the Russian government and the FSB provide any more details on their operations, but for now, it looks like Revil is finally out of commission.
