Samsung has sent out invitations for an event to be held online on Wednesday, October 20 at 7 a.m. PT/10 p.m. ET. It’s called “Galaxy Unpacked Part 2”, which is probably a sign that instead of all-new Galaxy phones, we may be seeing iterations on the existing ones.
With Samsung’s announcement, we now have an Apple event on Monday (where we’re looking forward to the new MacBook Pros), Google’s Pixel 6 launch on Tuesday, and now Samsung’s smaller event on Wednesday.
In addition to the invitation’s image, Samsung’s newsroom post announcing the event hinted at some sort of personalization for Galaxy devices: “Our users are versatile and live life in so many colorful, interesting and unique ways. As such, they The technology they use every day reflects their personality. Join Galaxy Unpacked Part 2 on October 20 and see how Samsung is opening up new experiences for self-expression through technology.”
That could mean anything, but it also hints at new colors for the Galaxy phone, or perhaps a full-customization option. For example, I can imagine creating a Z Flip 3 with colors of my choice on each side of the fold, and the teaser image might hint at just that. With the Z Fold 2, Samsung gave customers the option to choose their own accent colors for the hinge, though that option went away on the Z Fold 3 (thus far, anyway).
Of course, no customization program has come close to the original Moto X, which let people choose from several different color options and even materials for their phones – including bamboo. It doesn’t look like Samsung would be willing to go that far.
The Galaxy S21 FE, a lower-cost “fan version” of the Galaxy S21, has been kicking around the rumor mill for a while now, which seems even more unlikely. This is less likely mainly because the S21 FE is currently kind of in limbo where it has been either delayed or canceled due to chip constraints. Sammobile Reports that Samsung is still considering a January launch for the S21 FE.
Despite what Samsung announced on Wednesday the 20th, it will be hard to get attention after all Sturm (Apple) and Drang (Google) in the past two days. Although perhaps choosing Wednesday is Samsung’s strategic attempt to snatch some interest from the Pixel 6.
Speaking of it being a busy week, we also have NS ledge10 year event of on the Nerdshala on Friday and Saturday. If you’re in New York City, tickets are available at a Discount with code $99 HERE NOW. That leaves Thursday the 21st open for any other tech company to announce anything. Has anyone heard of OnePlus recently?
